蓬萊蕉屬常綠多年生蔓性草本，原產墨西哥南部至哥倫比亞。肉質莖綠色粗壯。莖以發達氣生根吸附方式攀附。互生心形葉片，葉寬近1m，有羽狀深缺刻，葉脈間有圓形窗孔。黃白色佛燄苞厚革質，長20~30cm。肉穗花序淺黃色，高溫期開花，開花至果熟約需一年。
An evergreen perennial vine herb in the genus Monstera, native to the areas from southern Mexico to Colombia. Fleshy stems green and stout. The vine climbs and grows by affixing the well-developed aerial roots on supporting structures. Leaves alternate, heart-shaped nearly 1m wide, with pinnate deep incisions, and round holes between the veins. Spathe yellow-white, thick and leathery, 20~30cm long. Spadix light yellow, blooms in the hot seasons. The fruits take about one year to ripe since flowering.
全日照或半日照溫暖環境，地植或盆植，能依靠牆垣或樹幹、岩壁種植，以符合植株生長特性。介質使用富含有機質的壤土即可，每年施用一次長效性綜合肥料，介質乾才澆水。繁殖使用扦插法。
It strives in full-sun or partial-sun and warm environments, in the ground or in containers as long as they can grow against the wall, tree trunk and rock wall to meet its climbing characteristics. Loam rich in organic matter is recommended. Apply a slow-release compound fertilizer once a year, and water only when the medium is dry. Propagated from cuttings.
聚合果可食，口感像香蕉、風味像鳳梨，因此稱為蓬萊蕉（鳳梨蕉臺語諧音），但不宜多食。全株汁液含草酸鈣（蓚酸）結晶，接觸皮膚或黏膜組織會引起刺癢感，嚴重會起疹發炎。
The aggregate fruits are edible, with banana texture and pineapple taste, that’s why it’s also known as Penglai banana in Chinese (Penglai is a homonym for pineapple), but overeat is not advisable. The sap of plant contains calcium oxalate (gallic acid) crystals, if incidentally contacted, it may cause irritation on the skin or mucous membrane tissues and even cause rash and inflammation for severe cases.
