Feature Description

As the name suggests, Traveller's Palm provides water for travelers to quench their thirst in arid places, but where is the water from? It comes from the rainwater accumulated in the crannies of the leaf base. For drinking, just poke a hole at the leaf base and water will spray out. With erect stem and fan-shaped leaves, the plant is full of tropical charm The inflorescence is large and secretes mucus to attract insects to pollinate; the seed is coated by a layer of bright blue aril, which is a rare feature in the plant kingdom.

Cultivation

It suitably grows in hot and humid environments with full sun or partial sun and prefers well-drained soils rich in organic matter; avoid waterlogging. The soil must be deep enough for the roots to grip tightly to resist strong wind. Propagated by seeds or ramets.

應用 Application

Valued for the beautiful shape, the plan can be used as a garden landscape tree. Avoid planting them in a wind-facing direction which may damage the leaves and affect the appearance. The base of leaf sheath can store water which is claimed drinkable, but it’s advised to use with caution.
