硃砂根屬常綠灌木，原產東亞至東南亞各地，臺灣亦有分佈。主枝健壯直立，側枝纖細。橢圓形革質葉，葉緣波浪狀。繖形花序於側枝頂生。白色至粉紅色花下垂。鮮紅色。開花夏季，果期冬至春季。

An evergreen shrub in the genus Ardisia, native from East Asia to Southeast Asia, and also distributed in Taiwan. The main limbs are strong and erect while lateral branches are slender. Oval leathery leaves with wavy leaf margins. Terminal umbels borne at the lateral branch. White or pink flowers droop. Flowering in summer and fruiting from winter to spring.

Grown in partial shade, warm to cool climates. High humidity can promote the growth and fertile and well-drained medium is essential. Apply long-active compound fertilizers once every season. Propagated by seeding.

萬兩名稱源自日文，因為名稱討喜，所以臺灣沿用作為商品名，並作為年節的吉祥植物。耐陰性強，廣泛用於中、日式傳統庭園，或陰暗的大樓中庭、門廳等地點作為景觀配置用。多與景石配植或叢植，也能列植成矮籬。戶外、陽台種植要防範鳥類啄食果實。

The Chinese alias “Wanliang” originated in Japanese, means tons of gold. Taiwan traders continued using the name for the auspicious meaning.
