細緻的分裂葉片是最大的特徵，通常是5片，就像5支爪子，因此而得名，裂葉有生態上的意義，能夠避免昆蟲啃食時造成全葉嚴重損傷。雌雄異花；雄花聚集成花球狀，形狀像迷你珍珠丸子；雌花則是晶瑩小巧的珍珠形狀；幼果白色，成熟後變為紫黑色，整束密集排列，造型非常奇特。綠葉、黑果與雌雄花同時在植株頂端依序向上開展，極具欣賞價值。

Fine-cut lobes are the most distinctive feature of Miagos Bush, usually split into 5, just like 5 claws, hence the Chinese name. 蘭嶼八角金盤屬常綠灌木，原產東南亞。互生圓形或橢圓形葉片有掌狀深裂，裂片4~6片，一般為5片，因此而得「五爪」之名。繖形花序頂生，雌雄異花，雌花先開，幼果白色，成熟後變為紫黑色。雄花序位置比雌花高且開花晚，造成同一花序的果實與雄花同時存在的特殊造型。開花結果夏至秋季。

全日或半日照溫暖環境。介質略乾就須澆水，時常於葉片噴水有助於新葉生長。肥料春至秋季每季施用一次長效肥。如果有枝葉生長過密的現象，可以酌加修除以使樹冠通風良好，避免躲藏介殼蟲等害蟲。

五爪木葉片造型特殊，具有相當高的觀賞價值，園藝栽培以斑葉品種為主，適合盆缽單植或於庭園種植添景，多株群植為灌叢或列植為綠籬都合適。
