秋海棠屬多年生草本或半灌木，原產古巴。莖初生時直立後四散下垂，節間長。原種莖葉為綠色，園藝栽培以莖葉紅色的個體為主。互生不對襯長卵形至橢圓形葉，葉緣有不規則圓齒或缺刻。雌雄異花，花白色。

A perennial herb or semi-shrub in the genus Begonia, native to Cuba. Stems erect when newly born and then turning sagging, internodes long. The parental species produces green stems and leaves, while the cultivars are dominated by those with red stems and leaves. Leaves alternate, asymmetrically long ovate to elliptic in shape, margin with irregularly rounded teeth or incisions. Monoecious, flowers white.

The plant normally grows in warm environments with partial sunlight and thrives vigorously in highly humid conditions. It needs shaded from direct sun in summer and prefers well-drained soils rich in organic matter. Apply long-active fertilizer once a season. Propagated by cuttings.
