山蘇屬多年生草本，臺灣原生，非洲至玻里尼西亞一帶、澳洲、亞洲熱帶區、東南亞亦有分佈。根莖短而粗；葉自地下莖環狀著生，由中心向四方開展而成巢狀。葉披針形，先端漸尖，全緣微呈波浪狀；葉脈在中肋有明顯突出於葉背；葉色正面翠綠；葉柄短而多肉，黑色，基部被有黑褐色線形鱗片；孢子囊群線形，位於中肋和葉緣之間，由中肋延側脈著生。

冬季生育緩慢，夏秋發育快速，喜好溫度介於 20~30°C之間。以孢子繁殖。
