赤楠屬常綠灌木或喬木，臺灣原生於蘭嶼、綠島，菲律賓亦有分佈。幼枝光滑，分枝細密，嫩枝葉呈紅色。對生革質倒卵形或橢圓形葉，先端鈍或圓，側脈疏少。頂生聚繖花序，小花白色。漿果狀核果球形或橢圓形，熟果暗紫黑色。

An evergreen shrub or tree in the genus Syzygium, native to Lanyu and Green Island, Taiwan and also found in the Philippines. Branchlets smooth and densely branched, branchlet leaves are red. Leaves opposite, leathery, obovate or elliptic, apex obtuse or rounded, lateral veins sparse. Cymes terminal, flowers small and white. Berry-shaped drupe spherical or oval, ripe dark purple.

全日照溫暖環境，好高溫、濕潤、向陽之地。生性強健，耐熱、耐旱、耐瘠、耐風。以種子或扦插繁殖。栽培介質以壤土或砂質壤土為佳。成樹移植之前需斷根處理。

The plant grows well in full sun and warm environments; a lover of heat, moist, and sun-facing locations. Robust in nature, tolerant to heat, drought, barren and resistant to wind. Reproduced from seeds or cuttings. The medium is preferably loam or sandy loam. Root pruning procedure required before transplanting the adult trees.

樹冠蔥籠茂密，可作庭園景觀樹。自然型或修剪整型均可表現葉片質感，亦可列植作綠籬使用。果實可誘鳥。

Prized for the lush canopy, the plant can be a garden ornament tree or hedge. The natural tree shape or topiary shape can both display the beautiful texture of the foliage. The fruits can be used to attract birds.
