杜鵑屬常綠或落葉灌木，臺灣特有種，產於臺灣全島平地至高海拔2850m山區。枝條多分枝，小枝密被金黃色腺毛。互生披針狀長橢圓形至長橢圓狀卵形葉，常叢生枝梢，葉片被褐色毛茸。花1~4朵頂生；花冠漏斗形，磚紅色。除冬季花開稀少外，終年花開不斷，為臺灣野生杜鵑中，花期最長的一種。卵形蒴果，外被腺毛。

A Taiwan’s endemic evergreen or deciduous shrub in the genus Rhododendron, widely distributed from the lowland to alpine areas 2850m high in Taiwan island. Much branched, branchlets densely covered with golden glandular trichomes. Leaves alternate, lanceolate oblong to oblong-ovate, often tufted at branch tips, blade covered with brown fluff. Flowers 1-4 terminal; corolla funnel-shaped, brick red. The species bloom throughout the year but sparse in winter, which has the longest anthesis period among Taiwan ’s wild rhododendrons. Capsule ovate, coated with glandular trichomes.

喜冷涼氣候，全日照或半日照，耐寒、抗風、耐旱、耐貧瘠。喜偏酸性土壤，但以肥沃之壤土且排水良好者為佳。以種子或扦插繁殖。

It grows well in old, full sun or partial sun conditions; tolerant to cold, wind, drought and barren. Fertile and well-drained acidic soils are preferred. Grown from seeds or cuttings.

開花繁盛，可作庭園景觀樹、盆花或綠籬。

Prized for the flourishing blossoms, the plant is an excellent garden landscape tree, flowering bonsai or hedge.
