臺灣特有種常綠喬木，分布於臺灣中部的低海拔闊葉林中，在北山坑、蓮華池及日月潭等地可見之。因生育地遭破壞及族群遭挖採，數量持續下降，生存備受威脅。經評估列屬「瀕臨絕滅」級稀有植物。幹皮灰紅褐色，細長條片狀剝落。具有圓球狀頂芽。葉線形至闊線狀披針形，嫩葉呈紅色。雄毬花無柄，圓柱狀，1至3個簇集腋生；雌花無花被包覆。種子單一成桃形，頂端突起歪；肉質果托肥大，生長由綠轉黃再轉紅色至完熟時轉紫黑色。

Taiwan's endemic evergreen trees, distributed in low-altitude broad-leaved forests in central Taiwan and also visible in Beishankeng, Lianhuachi and Sun Moon Lake. As the native habitats were destroyed and the wild groups were dug and taken away, the population continued to declining and threatened. It’s rated as an “endangered” rare species. The bark is reddish brown with slender strips peeling off. The buds are spherical and terminal. The leaves are linear or broad-lanceolate; new leaves are red. Male flowers have no pedicels, cylindrical, 1 to 3 in clusters borne at axils; female flowers without perianth. The seeds are single and ovate, with skewed apical protrusions; the fleshy hypocarp is thick, from green to yellow, and then red to purple when ripe.

土壤以富含腐植質壤土且排水良好者為佳，喜溫暖半遮陰環境。種子繁殖為主，亦可扦插繁殖。

The plant prefers humus-rich loam, good drainage, warm and partial sun environments. Propagated by seeding, also possibly by cutting.

木材堅韌，可作建築、雕刻用材。熟果托可食。可作庭園景觀樹、綠籬、盆景。葉具藥用，可治支氣管炎、關節炎。樹皮萃取物有治癌功效。

The hard timber can be used in construction and engraving. Ripe fruits are edible. It can be a garden landscape tree, hedges, and potted bonsai. The leaves have medicinal properties against bronchitis and arthritis. Bark extract can treat cancer.
